Crisp Sandwich Day - 25 October
There are sandwiches that have been carefully planned, generously filled and beautifully presented – and then there's the crisp sandwich.
Bread, butter, crisps. That's pretty much it. Yet mention one in a room full of people and you'll soon discover everyone has an opinion about the best combination.
Crisp Sandwich Day falls on 25 October and celebrates one of those wonderfully uncomplicated food combinations that probably doesn't need an awareness day, but we're rather pleased it has one.
For a caterer that spends a lot of time making sandwiches, we know just how much difference the filling makes. But the crisp sandwich introduces another important ingredient: crunch.
Texture plays a big part in how we experience food. Adding something crisp to something soft creates contrast, which is perhaps part of the reason crisps find their way into sandwiches even when they weren't technically invited.
Then there are the combinations. Ready salted keeps things simple. Cheese and onion adds another layer of flavour. Salt and vinegar brings considerably more enthusiasm to proceedings. And that's before anyone starts debating whether the crisps should be left whole for maximum crunch or crushed first to make the sandwich slightly easier to eat.
We're not getting involved in that argument.
What we can say is that sandwiches and crisps are both familiar sights at workplace lunches. We make and deliver plenty of sandwiches at Masons Kitchen, and crisps are available to order alongside them.
Perhaps that's really the charm of the crisp sandwich. It isn't trying to be sophisticated. It's simple, nostalgic and endlessly customisable, and sometimes that's exactly what you fancy.
Food doesn't always need a complicated story behind it to be worth talking about. Sometimes it's just fun to discover that something you've been doing for years has somehow acquired its own day.
So, on 25 October, we'll continue doing what we do best: making the sandwiches and supplying the crisps.
What happens after that is between you and your lunch.
